Channelizing the attention of the US lawmakers into a serious issue related to our children’s well being, the Hollywood actor and human rights activist, Ashton Kutcher, has made an emotional appeal before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee requesting the creation of a strong rule to curb the occurrence of the child sex exploitation cases. The actor is the chairman of Thorn, the organisation which develops software related to this. It is said that the organisation has recently developed a software, named ‘Spotlight’, which helps to locate the victims of certain kind of sexual abuse. A report published in 2012 identified that nearly sixty-three per cent of minor victims in the US were being purchased or sold through online websites.
While speaking before the committee, the actor claims that the modern technologies are being misused to promote this modern slavery. He opines that we should use the same technology to defend the occurrence of this kind of evil activities. As per the report, it was a hearing, named ‘Ending Modern Slavery’, convened by the said committee in order to hear the suggestions and opinions of the people and organisations working in the field. It is learned that the actor’s organisation has been requested by the authorities to help develop a software which can track the perpetrators of the child sex exploitation. It seems that it is the high time to create a strong defence against the modern sexual slavery and child sex abuses or else it is going to make devastating effects on our society in near future.
