The Supreme Court verdict convicting Sasikala in the disproportionate asset case comes as a shock to those who are eagerly waiting to see ‘Chinnamma’ as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. For last few weeks, the state has been witnessing a huge political battle between the caretaker Chief Minister, O Panneerselvam, and the CM aspirant, Sasikala, popularly known as ‘Chinnamma’. In recent days, her representatives and she herself several times met the TN governor in order to convince him of her ability to become the new CM by winning the majority support in the TN assembly. Against that claim, she had to face strong resistance from the caretaker CM itself, who is said to be enjoying the support of DMK and BJP. The verdict imposing huge fine and sentence on the CM aspirant comes as a boon to the caretaker CM as it would restrict ‘Chinnamma’ from becoming the CM for at least next ten years. The case against former CM late J Jayalalithaa and her aides like Sasikala was registered in 1996 following the complaint of senior saffron leader Subramanian Swamy. The case witnessed several twists and turns. It was transferred to the Bangalore Court; and even though the accused were convicted by the court, they were later acquitted by the Karnataka High Court.
