Corruption engulfs Nigerian judicial system

The mounting corruption in the Africa’s oil-rich nation, Nigeria, unfortunately did not spare even the judicial system of the country. As per the report, a total of over fifteen judges is under investigation over the corruption charges in the country. At least seven judges had been arrested by the authorities over the same charge on last month. Later, the authorities released them on bail. Anyway, the National Judicial Council, a regulatory body, has ordered that the tainted judges must not be allowed to do the judicial function until their taints have been wiped off. Notably, most of these tainted judges are accused of accepting bribes in exchange of favourable judgement. It is a fact that if these judges are allowed to continue their job they may extensively utilise the position to degrade the judicial system of the country. It seems that the newly inducted political regime has totally failed to tackle the corruption effectively. Earlier, during their election campaign, the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, pledged that he would considerably reduce the corruption rate by introducing some strict anti-corruption policies. Anyway, the tainted judges strongly denounced the allegations raised against them by the semi-authoritarian government. It seems that a huge rift has been created between the political executives and judiciary. However, the National Judicial Council has constituted a three-member committee to handle petitions against the judges.
