Fabricio Alvarado, the evangelical preacher who is one of the candidates of Costa Rica’s presidential election, has won the first round of the crucial election, pushing his nearest opponent, Carlos Alvarado, at least three points behind.
The preacher has secured at least twenty-five per cent vote, while the centre-left leader wristed around twenty-two votes.
Unfortunately, the winner of the first round has not grabbed the level of votes required to be declared as the final winner, prompting a run-off.
Those contestants attained the top two places in the election will have to compete against each other in the second round in which only they will compete for the top post.
The issue of same-sex marriage was the most sensitive subject during the presidential election campaign. Both candidates –who have filled the top two positions in the first round- contributed enough time to convince their supporters and voters their view about the subject.
Mr. Fabrico Alvarado, who opined during a speech that the family is the fundamental base of society, campaigned against the same-sex marriage, in favour of which the country’s top court ruled in the recent past. Meanwhile, Mr. Carlos Alvarado strongly campaigned for the same-sex marriage.
Anyway, there is no doubt that before the next round, the candidates will lead aggrieve election campaign highlighting this subject and their policies related to the subject.
