Dalit Man brutally punished after his son eloped with a girl belong to different caste

A Dalit man have been brutally thrashed and forced to lick his own spit after his son eloped with a girl belong to a community different from that of his family’s.

The brutal incident has happened in a rural village located in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh –Sonda Habibpur (Bulandshahr).

The police authorities have registered a case under serious charges including the SC/ST act. However, the victim due to fear is presently living near a police station. While speaking to the media persons, he has expressed his fear.

Recently, the victim’s son married the girl with whom he eloped, as a court, in which the couple was presented, considering the opinion of the girl who expressed in the court her willingness to go with the boy she herself selected to spend her life, ordered that the girl should be send with the boy.

The victim, who knew very well that her son could be harmed if he continues to stay in the village, sent the couple out of the village in order to protect the newly married couple.

It is assumed that some members of the girl’s family have sought the help of some affluent class members in the village to get back their girl.

As per the complaint filed by the victim, he was invited to the venue, where the attack took place, in the name of a village sabha meeting. In his statement, he clearly alleged that there was no sabha when he reached the venue, but there were nearly one hundred men belong to the affluent class and some close relatives of the girl.

What can be done to avoid such unfortunate incidences? Why the protection of SC/ST communities is not a top priority subject for the governments yet?
