Former Portuguese PM to become UN secretary general

The Former Portuguese Prime Minister and Socialist leader, Antonio Guterres, is set to become the next supremo of the prestigious global organisation, the United Nations. He was the head of the UNHCR refugee agency. In 1995, he was elected as the Prime Minister of Portugal. He is one of the most powerful political leaders of the European continent.Remarkably, the refugee crisis was at the peak when he was designated to the most complicated office, the UN refugee agency.

Notably, from 2005 to 2015, he led the agency through some of the world’s worst refugee crisis. In fact, he faced negative response from his own nation. He repeatedly pleaded the European Nations to take a liberal stand on the refugee issue.Even though the European powers shut their ears, his voice and statements reserved acceptance across the globe, excluding the Europe. Now, his statements are getting positive response and acceptance across the globe. While speaking to the reporters, the former Portuguese President, Anibal Cavaco Silva, claimed that now Mr Guterres is a most respected personality. He reportedly reminded the listeners that Mr Guterres left behind a huge legacy. As per the report published in the International Medias, Mr Guterres enjoys clear favour in the EU parliament.Anyway, a formal voting over the secretary election is expected to happen on today. His ten-year-long experience as a leader of UN refugee agency gifts him more prominence and acceptance.
