German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reached the headquarters of the Social Democrats for the coalition talks, along with the leaders of her party’s sister organisation, Christian Social Union.
It is said that it is the last chance for the Chancellor, who suffered a serious electoral failure in the last general election, to form a government.
Before entering the venue in which the meeting has been arranged, the German Supremo has expressed her confidence to form a government to the media personals, who have asked her how confident she is.
Earlier, Ms. Merkel’s effort to form a government in last December met an unpleasant ending as the political parties, such as FDP and Greens, which came forward to join the Christian Democrats, unexpectedly dropped their plan midway after their failed meeting with the Chancellor.
SPD was once the partner of the CDU and CSU, which has been ruling the country for years under the leadership of Angela Merkel.
The SPD’s underperformance in the last General Election, due to the unexpected rise of the anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, and far-rightist party, the AfD, forced the party to rethink their political strategy. As part of their new strategy, the SPD publically announced its plan to stay out of the government led by Ms. Merkel, forcing the latter to approach other partners in the initial stage of negotiations started immediately after the election.
Since the failure of the initial stage of negotiations, many Germans have been indirectly forcing the SPD to join the CDU and CSU to form a stable government.
