The Congress Party’s state unit functioning in the Indian state of Gujarat has been weakened considerably as senior Congress leader Balwantsinh Rajput has resigned from its parent party and joined the BJP which rules the state.Mr Rajput has filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat, along with BJP supremo Amit Shah and BJP’s central minister Smriti Irani.Of the eleven Rajya Sabha seat, the term allotted to nearly three of them is going to end in the mid-August.
Along with Rajput, another five Congress Party members of the state assembly have resigned. At this moment, it is not clear whether the BJP can help all three nominated candidates to reach the upper house. Even after the unexpected loss, the Congress Party still has fifty-one members in the house. They only need the support of forty-seven members to help at least one of its candidates to sail through the tough election. As per the latest report, Ahmed Patel is the candidate of the Congress. According to the report, a prominent faction of the congress party is unsatisfied due to the party’s attempt to field the senior Congress leader again in the RS election. The Rajya Sabha election is scheduled to happen on August 8, 2017. In the coming days, the Congress Party in the state of Gujrat is likely to suffer some serious setbacks, say political observers.
