The population ratio of India is 943 females per 1000 of males. Yet, of the 545 seats in the lower house of the parliament, only 61 are occupied by women at present. That means women are under-represented in the prime law making platform of the country.
A latest survey report says that Indians want more women in the lower house of the parliament. The survey has been conducted by a citizen’s collective, named ‘Shakti’. The process has been done through a mobile application, named ‘Neta App’, which is supported by as many as two crore verified subscribers. Around ten lakh people have participated in the survey. The question that has been put forth through the app before its subscribers has been simple: do you want more women in Lok Sabha 2019. Almost 82.2 per cent of those participated in the survey has responded positively to the question.
It is hoped that the political parties would respond positively towards the survey report released by the citizen’s collective.
The under-representation of women in the Indian parliament is the clear indication of the country’s continued affection towards its patriarchal past. It is high time to detach from that connection.
