At least eighty-five people are set to get the Padma awards as the Indian President has approved the names of these people for the awards ahead of the Republic Day.
Renowned music director Ilaiyaraaja, former Indian cricket captain M S Dhoni and famous sports personality Pankaj Advani are the popular figures who have been granted spaces in the Padma awards list approved by the President Ram Nath Kovind.
The music director will get a Padma Vibhushan award and the sports personalities will receive a Padma Bhushan award each.
Of these eight-five Padma awards, at least seventy-three awards are Padma Shri awards. Doctor couple Abhay Bang and Rani Bang, Malaysian dancer-choreographer Ramli Bin Ibrahim and Gond artist Bhajju Shyam are the famous personalities who have been figured in the list in which those offered the Padma Shri awards have been named.
Apart from these renowned names, several ‘unsung’ heroes have also found places in the prestigious list -it was the NDA government which initiated the tradition of giving the Padma awards to those unsung heroes who served the poor, popularised tribal arts and set up free schools.
This time, Lakshmikutty, the tribal women from the Indian state of Kerala who prepares over five hundred herbal medicines from memory, and Arvind Gupta, the IIT Kanpur alumnus who inspired students to learn science in a different way (from trash), are the main personalities who have been offered the Padma awards under the unsung heroes category.
