Is Turkey trying to legalise statutory rape

In what could be termed as a shocking development on the statutory rape issue, the Turkish ruling party introduced a bill allowing the men who committed the statutory rape crimes to get off scot-free. As per the report, the Turkish MPs, particularly the ruling party MPs, supported the bill introduced in the parliament. It was learned that the pardon would be given to those men who had sex with women without force and are willing to marry the victim. Meanwhile, the opposition alleged that the move would promote child marriage and rape crimes. As per the statistics, the violence against the women in Turkey is presently at its peak. The report exposed that nearly forty per cent of the women reported some kind of sexual or physical abuse.

Shockingly, the murder rate of the women dramatically increased in the Arab country as per the statistics. Anyway, on Thursday, as an initial step, the bill had been cleared by the parliament members. Again, on Tuesday, the bill will be laid before the parliament for a second round discussion and debate. After these deliberations, the bill will be again presented in the parliament for final voting. Once it is cleared, it is expected to quash the convictions of nearly three thousand men accused of the statutory rape. Meanwhile, the opposition parties strongly denounced the move saying the sexual abuse and violence against women are crimes, and there is no point of consent in these crimes.
