Ensuring a bright future for the populist parties like Five Star Movement, the Democratic Party leader and Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, is planning to resign from the top post. He has suffered a huge defeat in a referendum tabled by the ruling front, sought to reform the constitution of the country. While the ruling party asserts that the government was trying to strengthen the central government through the referendum, the opponents allege that the proposed reforms would have given more powers to the Prime Minister. The populist parties have succeeded in creating a feeling that the Democratic Party and the Italian political executives are trying to consolidate and centralise the power. In the referendum poll, in which nearly seventy per cent people have turned out for casting vote, the ruling front’s proposal has only gained forty per cent acceptance.
Around sixty per cent people have voted against the referendum, giving an unexpected it a defeat. While speaking to the media persons after the referendum, Renzi has wished good luck to all Italians. He is expected to formally express his plan to his colleagues regarding the resignation, during a cabinet meeting today. Subsequently, after the cabinet approval, he is likely to submit his resignation letter to the Italian President. It is learned that he would face strong disapproval from the cabinet and president, and he may be advised to stay in the government until next general election. Anyway, the ruling government may not announce an election soon. The Italian supremo may appoint a caretaker Prime Minister. Most probably, Italian Finance Minister Pier Carlo Padoan will be the next Prime Minister, if the present PM resigns.
