Giving a good message to other states, the Indian state of Karnataka is set to become the first state to launch a separate policy for the burn victims.

The policy will help the victims to acquire housing, rehabilitation and employment facilities. The policy will also deal with the insurance and social security measures concerning to the burn victims.

Vimochana, the organisation which has been working with the burn victims for the last twenty years, has helped the Karnataka Health Department to articulate the draft policy.

Before doing so, the health department has consulted the prominent stakeholders such as the NGOs working in the sector, legal experts operating in the sector and doctors having knowledge in this field.

It is said that the important bill will be presented in the legislative assembly in its upcoming November session.

A shocking report says that nearly fifty women die every month in the state due to burn-related issues.

In the report released by renowned NGO Vimochana, it is said that the number of women who suffered burn injuries from 2001 to 2011 was sixty per cent higher than men.

These realities indicate that there is an urgent need for such a policy in every state.
