In the draft white paper prepared by the Law Commission of India, the Commission headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice B S Chauhan has supported the demand for simultaneous elections, which has been raised by the ruling BJP since it was inducted as the ruling party of the world’s largest democratic country.
As per a media report, the aforesaid white paper has been circulated among the experts and public.
The people and expert, according to the report, have been asked to make suggestions regarding the proposed recommendation before the prescribed date of May 8.
The opposition parties such as the Congress Party are likely to oppose the recommendation made by the commission allegedly at the behest of the central government.
Until the year 1967, the elections in the country were held in the simultaneous election model. It was due to the disruptions in the Parliament and Legislative Assembles happed after the aforesaid year the elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies were separated.
The opposition parties fear that if the elections are conducted simultaneously in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, the process might give an advantage to the ruling party.
In all elections conducted in the simultaneous election mode, the party which ruled the central government made considerable gains.
Will the country witness a simultaneous election in the year 2019?
