The Shape of Water, the fantasy movie which is directed by Guillermo del Toro, has won the prestigious Best Picture award in the ninetieth Oscars ceremony organised at the renowned Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The film has defeated ‘Call Me By Your Name’, ‘Darkest Hour’, ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Get Out’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Phantom Thread’, ‘The Post’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing’ to wrist the top position as a winner.
American actress Frances McDormand has secured the best actress award in the ceremony by defeating Sally Hawkins, Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Merly Streep, while British actor Gary Oldman has wristed the best actor award in the ceremony by pushing back Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington.
This year’s Oscars ceremony has gained more prominence than the previous year’s Oscars ceremony, which is the biggest award ceremony organised to felicitate those working in the global film industry, as this is the first award function after the emergence of the Harvey Weinstein controversy, which triggered a world-wide discussion about the workplace sexual abuse, particularly about the workplace sexual abuse culture prevailing in the global film industry.
The impact of the ‘Me Too’ campaign, which was developed to protest against the sexual abuse culture by encouraging the victims to speak out courageously about the shocking experience they went through, is likely to reflect in the ceremony also.
