Portugal parliament gives accent to a historic law making legal gender change easier

Giving a serious blow to the conservatives, the lawmaking body of Portugal, supported by the liberals, has given clear accent to a historic law which makes the tough process of legal gender change easier.

Once the law comes to effect, the process of changing the gender in the official documents will be a less easy job. The new law is likely to help tens of thousands of transgender people who are presently suffering due to some archaic laws which are deciding these issues at present.

As per the present laws, no person who provides a legitimate medical certificate to support his/her claim is allowed to change his/her gender in the official documents.

The new law not only allows changing the gender without presenting any medical document, but also lowers the legal age for leveraging the new legal provision from eighteen to sixteen.

At least 109 law makers in the 230-member parliament have supported the new law, when it has been presented before the law making body for consideration.

When several liberals and transgender activists have supported the move, some conservatives have strongly criticised the new law.

Anyway, after the parliament voting process, the law have been forwarded to the president for his final accent.
