The Governor of Puerto Rico – Ricardo Rossello has announced his resignation after mass protest in the US territory. Rossello said that he will be submitting his resignation on 2nd of August.
The decision was taken after a mass street protest of about two weeks, triggered by a leak of crude and insulting chat messages between him and his top advisers.
He had been criticized for a group text message, which was leaked on 13th of July . The messages revealed sexist, profane and homophobic comments.
The chat was reportedly having 880 pages of exchanges between the governor and 11 male allies.
In a recently posted video, Rossello said, “I announce that I will be resigning from the governor’s post effective Friday, August 2 at 5 pm”. He said that the ‘demands’ of the protesters “have been overwhelming”.
“I feel that to continue in this position would make it difficult for the success that I have achieved to endure,” he added.
