A former Central Bureau of Investigation officer, who questioned one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, Perarivalan, during the early stage of investigation, has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, saying that some statements which were told by the accused was not recorded by him as it would have been an exculpatory statement.
The ex-CBI officer has confessed in the court under oath that he then believed that it was not good to record the exculpatory statement as the investigation regarding the bomb was pending at that time.
It has been said that Perarivalan, who has been languishing in solitary confinement for last twenty-six years, had confessed before the aforementioned officer during the initial stage of question sessions that he did not know the purpose for which the battery he purchased was used.
The accused’s advocate has criticised the investigators who failed to question the bomb maker who has been languished in the Sri Lankan prison.
He has also expressed doubt in the prosecution’s statement that the battery purchased by Perarivalan was used to make the bomb which killed the former PM, Rajiv Gandhi.
Anyway, the top court has asked the central government to inform it within the timeframe of two weeks whether it supports the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to grant remission to Perarivalan, who was only nineteen years old when he was arrested in the case.
