Renowned Polish director Wajda died at the age of 90

The world renowned Polish filmmaker and Oscar laureate, Andrzej Wajda, reportedly died of lung failure at the age of ninety. In the year 2000, he received the prestigious Oscar award for his noteworthy contributions to the world film industry.

He was born in 1926 at Suwalki in Poland. His family was among the victims of a brutal soviet rule. His father was an army officer. The dreaded Katyn massacre took the life of his father. So, throughout his life, he believed in anti-aggression and anti-Soviet ideologies. He was very vocal against the invasion of art, and advocated for the freedom of the artist.

Notably, in an interview given to an international media during 2007, he claims that he never hoped of living in a free Poland. He further added that he was happy he witnessed a free Poland. His works are mostly filled with anti-communist topics and pro-nationalist hopes. Till 1989, until the fall of Soviet Union, some of his works had been seen as anti-communist and pro-nationalist motivators by the communist leaders of the then Polish government.

Interestingly, he trained to be a professional painter. Fortunately, he became a filmmaker giving some of the classic films and documentaries. His latest film, Powidoki, which tells the life story of a painter, was selected by the Polish government as the country’s official entry for the best foreign-language film at the 2017 Oscar awards.

He, once, said the God gave the filmmaker two eyes for a good reason. As per his opinion, the first eye is to look into the Camera and the second one is to observe the world.
