Russia, which is one of the most supportive foreign partners of India, is likely to support the latter’s membership bid in the Wassenaar Arranagement, the multilateral technology regime similar to the Nuclear Supply Group.
At present, there are nearly forty-one members in the multilateral technology regime, which deals with the export controls for conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies.
As per the report, the meeting of this organisation is happening in Vienna today. It is said that the India’s bid for membership is likely to be discussed in this meeting.
The Russian sources claim that there is no serious opposition for the India’s membership in the multilateral organisation.
A senior Russian representative has used this opportunity to portray Moscow as a trustworthy partner, pointing out how the US proved itself as an untrustworthy partner by backing away from imposing pressure on China for withdrawing the communist country’s opposition to its prime Asian alley’s NSG bid. The representative has also asserted that Russia puts stress on ‘actions’, not in ‘words’.
Meanwhile, in the wake of these developments, the upcoming Russia-India-China meeting is very crucial for the future of relations between these powerful nations.
Experts say that the aforementioned meeting will help India to do away with the pro-US tilt, which has occurred after the US-Japan-Australia-India meeting.
Anyway, in the upcoming meet, several serious subjects including the NSG bid and BRI will be discussed.
