Sabarimala head priest asked to furnish his explanation on the BJP president’s statement

The head priest of renowned hill temple Sabarimala Kantararu Rajeevararu has been asked by the Travancore Devaswom Board to furnish his explanation on the BJP president’s controversial statement that the priest sought the party president’s counsel on closing of the temple on the occurrence of a violation of the tradition in the premises of the temple.

The notice seeking the explanation was served to the priest on Tuesday itself. The priest was asked to give his explanation in the timeframe of three days.

As per that, the priest has to come up with an explanation before Friday. The issue is likely to trigger a serious discussion on whether the TDB has the right to seek explanation from the head priest of the temple.

The most serious question is: whether the TDB’s attempt to bring the priest under their absolute control amounts to the dilution of the priest’s power and rights over the affairs of the temple that he is supposed to manage and control and has absolute authority as per the tradition.

The governing authorities should handle the issue with care. Any attempt to politicise the issue should be recognised and foiled.
