Smriti Degree row: Court seeks official records from Election Commission

In order to decide whether it should summon Union Minister Smriti Irani over the fake Degree case, a court in Delhi instructed the Election Commission to submit available official records regarding the educational qualification of the Minister.While contesting in the 2014 general election, she had submitted her educational details in her affidavit given to the Election Commission.The case is filed at Metropolitan Magistrate court in Delhi. It is heard by Justice Havinder Singh. It is learned that within few days he would announce his order on whether the minister should appear in the court or not.As per the report, the court observed that some clear clarifications were required in this case.Earlier, an official working in the poll panel informed the court that the information regarding the educational qualification of the minister is not traceable.

Subsequently, putting the minister in deep trouble, the Delhi University also informed the court that the documents regarding the minister’s certificate are not yet recovered.In the affidavit, the minister claimed that she cleared the BA course from Delhi University in the year 1996.The formal complaint regarding the issue was filed by freelance writer Ahmer Khan. In his complaint, he alleged that the minister had deliberately given a false affidavit.He pointed out that if a candidate intentionally gives misleading information to the poll panel, he could be punished under the Indian Penal Code section 125A (the Representation of Peoples act).
