Accusing the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation of showing anti-Israel attitude, the United States, which ceased its financial support to the International organisation in the year 2011 in protest of the organisation’s initiative to admit Palestine, the state which is technically at the state of war with the Jewish nation, as a full member, has completely pulled out from the most popular and powerful multilateral organisation.
The official letter regarding the proposed withdrawal has been sent to the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova by the United States Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson.
As per the media report, the official withdrawal will take effect on December 31, 2018 (that is, the US will not be the member of UNESCO when it will celebrate the 2019 New Year).
It is said that the US, though not interested to remain as a member of the organisation, is very much interested to be its permanent non-member observer.
At this moment, it is not clear whether the organisation will give such a prestigious status to the world’s most powerful country.
It is to be noted that it is not the first time that the White House has taken such a surprising step.
Earlier, in the year 1984, the US took similar step accusing the organisation of favoring the, then, Soviet Union. Later, in the year 2002, it re-joined the organisation.
