Violence mars JNUSU election

Jawaharlal Nehru University is the bastion of leftist students’ organisations. The AISF and AISA are the prime leftist students’ organisations that have presence in this prestigious campus. Actually, for last few years, several non-leftist parties have been trying to wrist seats in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, which, for last few years, have been ruled by the leftist students’ organisations.

In the year 2015, when a slight change in the nature of the union happened with the victory of a non-leftist member (that too, a far-rightist member) into the union, it became evident that how dedicatedly the far-rightist worked to contain the triumph of the leftists in the campus.

The latest election in the campus has witnessed a tight competition in almost all seats from the president post to secretary post, even to the representative post. What makes the latest election different from the previous ones is the scale of the violence that has happened during the election process. It is a clear example how undemocratic and intolerant the prestigious campus, which once stood for the betterment of democracy and tolerance, has become.

As per a latest news report, a group of students have disturbed the counting session of the JNUSU election by trying to wrist the sealed ballet boxes. It does not matter who does it. But, it do matter what these anti-democrats show to our younger generation, who are supposed to feel pride about our rich democratic history.

Campus politics is very different from the political stream of mainstream politics. It is actually a corrective force. Those students who engage in this stream of politics must have a clear understanding about the value of that stream.

Don’t let our future generation idealise wrong models. Think rationally!!!
