The Republican-led U.S. Senate on Saturday passed a temporary funding measure that would keep federal agencies operating through December 11, seeking to prevent a government shutdown just weeks before the November 3 congressional elections.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed its own short-term funding bill last month, but differences between the two measures must be resolved before President Donald Trump can sign the legislation. Current federal funding expires on September 30, leaving lawmakers less than five weeks to reach an agreement.
Senate Democrats said their version would restrict the Trump administration from shifting funds toward border security from other programs. The measure also provides flexibility for housing and food assistance programs and temporarily blocks a White House budget office rule that would give political appointees greater control over hundreds of billions of dollars in federal grants.
