Micron to Invest $10 Billion in New AI Memory Research Lab

Micron Technology said on Thursday it plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade in a newly established research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, aimed at advancing memory technologies, developing compute systems and supporting future chip manufacturing.

The Micron Research Labs will bring together customers, academic institutions, government agencies and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to pursue new breakthroughs. The facility is expected to connect with Micron’s research and technology operations across the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

The investment comes as demand for high-bandwidth memory surges amid the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. High-bandwidth memory is a critical component in modern AI systems because it enables large volumes of data to be rapidly delivered to AI accelerators. Micron expects to break ground on the Boise facility in 2027, with the lab designed to accommodate hundreds of researchers as well as international conferences and workshops.

The project builds on more than $250 billion Micron has separately committed to U.S. manufacturing and research and development. The company’s expansion also aligns with the Trump administration’s push to strengthen domestic semiconductor production, reduce reliance on overseas supply chains and maintain U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
