China’s Geely on Wednesday unveiled an ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging system capable of charging a vehicle in as little as four minutes, intensifying its technology competition with rival BYD. The company also introduced a next-generation EV battery and an upgraded Galaxy E5 pure-electric SUV as it seeks to revive sales amid a prolonged decline in China’s domestic EV market.
Supported by a 2.2-megawatt charging infrastructure and a high-rate battery, Geely said the system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in eight minutes and 40 seconds under normal ambient temperatures. The company is also integrating artificial intelligence into cloud-based and onboard systems to monitor battery health, manage thermal control and predict potential safety hazards.
The launch comes as China’s EV makers increasingly compete on charging speed, driving range and intelligent technologies. Earlier this year, BYD introduced a flash-charging system capable of charging a battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes and plans to build 90,000 charging stations by 2028, according to Deutsche Bank. Geely executives said future charging networks could resemble conventional fuel stations, with multiple brands contributing to infrastructure development and accelerating the global adoption of ultra-fast EV charging.
