The NYPD has intensified efforts to locate a suspect in the targeted murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Divers searched Central Park’s lake over the weekend, following reports of a backpack believed to belong to the suspect being found nearby. The bag contained a jacket and fake Monopoly money but no weapon, crucial evidence investigators hope will lead to the shooter’s identification. Police have not yet confirmed if the backpack is directly tied to the crime.
Authorities released new surveillance images of the suspect, who was last seen wearing a medical mask in a taxi and later captured without it during a brief interaction at an Upper West Side hostel. Investigators, supported by the U.S. Marshals Service, have expanded their search to Atlanta and along Greyhound bus routes connecting to New York City. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Mayor Eric Adams assured the public that investigators know the suspect’s identity but are withholding the name to avoid tipping him off. “The net is tightening, and we’re going to bring this person to justice,” Adams said. Law enforcement remains focused on recovering the murder weapon, which could provide critical leads. Retired officer Tom Walsh noted, “The event was well planned, but mistakes like revealing his face help narrow the search.”
