Portugal Joins Global HealthAI Network Ahead of EU AI Rules

Portugal has become the first European Union member state to join HealthAI’s Global Regulatory Network (GRN), marking a significant step in strengthening international oversight of artificial intelligence in healthcare. The agreement between Portugal’s healthcare regulator, Infarmed, and Geneva-based nonprofit HealthAI gives the country access to a directory of regulator-reviewed AI healthcare tools and a real-time alert system for reporting harmful incidents.

Portugal joins Britain, India, Brazil, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Zambia and Peru in the HealthAI network. The move comes as the European Union begins implementing its AI Act, with healthcare systems across the region increasingly adopting AI-powered technologies. Infarmed President Santos Ivo said international cooperation and the sharing of expertise are essential to ensuring the safe and effective use of AI in healthcare.

HealthAI, supported primarily by governments including Canada, Britain, Norway and Singapore, was established to develop common standards and governance frameworks for AI in healthcare. HealthAI Chief Executive Baptista Leite said the organisation is in discussions with other EU member states, emphasizing that Europe’s approach to AI regulation is likely to shape governance standards worldwide.
