Trump Faces 21st Court Defeat Over Voter Rolls

The Trump administration has suffered 21 consecutive court defeats in its efforts to obtain state voter rolls ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. Federal judges across the country have repeatedly ruled that states retain primary responsibility for managing federal elections and are not legally required to hand over sensitive voter information to the federal government.

The Justice Department has sued more than two dozen states over voter-roll requests, seeking records that can include dates of birth and partial Social Security numbers. The administration argues the data is needed to identify potential noncitizen voters, while Democrats and voting-rights groups say the effort is based on unsubstantiated claims and could undermine confidence in elections.

The Justice Department has appealed 16 of its losses and could ultimately take some cases to the Supreme Court. With Republicans defending narrow majorities in Congress, the administration’s broader election campaign has also included threats involving disaster funding and efforts to impose new restrictions on mail-in voting.
