Verizon announced on Wednesday that it is investing $70 million in a nationwide initiative to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training to job seekers, small businesses and educators as the U.S. economy undergoes a major transformation. The telecommunications company aims to equip hundreds of thousands of people with AI skills to prepare them for the changing workforce.
The initiative will involve partnerships with major nonprofit organisations, including Goodwill Industries, and use training resources from technology companies such as IBM, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft and OpenAI. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said AI will reshape the workforce and stressed the importance of preparing people for the transition, adding that businesses have a shared responsibility to support AI education and workforce development.
Schulman also urged major corporations to contribute funding to expand access to AI training, suggesting that contributions from Fortune 100 companies could create a multibillion-dollar fund. The new investment builds on Verizon’s $20 million commitment last year to help departing employees acquire AI skills following its announcement of 13,000 job cuts, bringing its total commitment to $70 million.
