Flavio Bolsonaro to Oppose Proposed U.S. Tariff on Brazilian Goods at Trade Hearing

Brazilian right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who is expected to run in the country’s October presidential election, has registered to participate in a public hearing before the U.S. International Trade Commission. The hearing, scheduled for July 6, will examine a proposal by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to impose a 25% tariff on Brazilian goods following an investigation into Brazil’s trade practices.

The USTR stated that it had identified what it described as “unreasonable” trade practices, leading to the recommendation for the new tariff. The proposal emerged shortly after Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, visited the United States and met with President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration.

In a summary of his planned testimony released on Tuesday, Bolsonaro said he would oppose the tariff on behalf of consumers and producers in both countries. He argued that the measure could harm a long-standing partnership between Brazil and the United States, emphasizing the importance of preserving economic ties that have benefited both nations for more than 80 years.
