A former U.S. Olympic canoeist, David Hearn, has been indicted on a felony charge of destruction of property for allegedly vandalizing the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. According to court records, Hearn, 67, is accused of deliberately damaging the pool’s liner on June 19, causing more than $1,000 in damage. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. Authorities allege he forcefully pulled on the liner and confronted a National Park Service employee before being arrested by U.S. Park Police.
The Reflecting Pool, which recently underwent a $14.7 million renovation, has faced multiple issues including algae growth and sections of detached liner. The project, ordered by President Donald Trump ahead of the July 4 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, drew criticism after the pool’s condition deteriorated soon after completion. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro described the alleged act as a deliberate attempt to damage a national landmark, while investigators continue probing reports of additional vandalism.
Hearn’s legal team has denied the allegations, calling the indictment politically motivated and accusing the Trump administration of attempting to deflect blame for problems with the renovation project. Hearn has acknowledged pulling on a loose section of liner while cycling near the memorial but maintains he did not remove or intentionally damage it. Although several individuals have reportedly been arrested in connection with vandalism at the site, Hearn is the first to face formal criminal charges.
