Major Carmakers Win First Round in UK Diesel Emissions Lawsuit

Some of the world’s largest car manufacturers secured a significant legal victory on Friday as a UK court largely dismissed key allegations in a major lawsuit over the use of alleged illegal “defeat devices” in diesel vehicles. The case centers on claims that certain vehicles were equipped with software designed to limit emissions control systems under specific conditions, potentially allowing higher pollution levels during normal driving.

Judge Sara Cockerill said she had “rejected most of the principal allegations” made against the manufacturers whose vehicles were examined during the trial, although she noted that the court had made some adverse findings in certain areas. The ruling marks the first stage of what is expected to be a lengthy legal battle over diesel emissions compliance.

The trial focused on 20 sample vehicles produced by five manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Nissan, Renault, and Stellantis-owned brands Peugeot and Citroën. While the decision represents an early win for the automakers, the broader litigation is expected to continue as the remaining issues in the case are addressed.
