Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its first Brazilian-made plug-in hybrid flex-fuel vehicle, the Song Pro Super-Hibrido Flex, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion strategy in Latin America. Developed through a collaboration between BYD’s research teams in Brazil and China, the new model can run on electricity, gasoline, or ethanol, catering specifically to Brazilian consumers.
The vehicle, which goes on sale across Brazil on Wednesday, offers an electric-only range of 60 kilometers for the GL variant and 120 kilometers for the premium GS model. Manufactured at BYD’s Camacari plant in Bahia state, the car already incorporates more than 50% locally sourced components, aligning with the company’s target of increasing local content in all Brazilian-made vehicles by January 2027.
BYD has invested 5.5 billion reais in the Camacari facility and expects to produce around 180,000 vehicles this year. The company aims to sell approximately 200,000 vehicles in Brazil in 2026, with the factory supplying nearly 150,000 units. Following strong demand in July, when BYD sold 23,465 vehicles and secured a 9.1% market share, the automaker is also considering exporting the flex-fuel technology to other markets, including India, as ethanol adoption expands globally.
