Synopsys, AWS Sign Multi-Year Chip Design Licensing Deal Worth Over $1 Billion

Synopsys and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Wednesday announced a multi-year agreement worth more than $1 billion under which AWS will license chip design intellectual property from Synopsys. The deal expands Synopsys’ growing business of licensing ready-made blueprints for components used in complex semiconductor designs.

Synopsys provides software and intellectual property that help companies including Nvidia and Intel design advanced chips. Its intellectual property licensing business generated $1.75 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year and has expanded from common chip components into more complex designs such as computing cores. The new agreement will focus on blueprints optimized for specific types of chips, the companies said.

AWS develops its own processors, including Graviton central processing units and Trainium chips designed for artificial intelligence workloads. The companies did not disclose which AWS chips will incorporate Synopsys’ designs. Under the agreement, Synopsys will also adopt AWS computing and storage services, along with Amazon Bedrock for building and deploying AI applications.
