eBay announced on Thursday that it will cut approximately 9% of its global workforce, affecting around 1,000 employees, as part of a restructuring plan to simplify operations and redirect resources towards its key strategic priorities. The move follows an earlier Reuters report on the planned layoffs. The company, which had 12,300 employees at the end of 2025, said the restructuring is aimed at strengthening its focus on the fastest-growing areas of its business.
The online marketplace expects to incur pretax restructuring charges of $130 million to $150 million, primarily related to severance payments and post-employment benefits. According to a regulatory filing, most of these charges will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2026 and are expected to result in future cash expenditures. CEO Jamie Iannone had informed employees through an internal memo that the company was simplifying its operations and reallocating resources to support its strategic priorities.
Despite the planned job cuts, eBay expects its third-quarter results to exceed the forecast issued alongside its August earnings report. The latest announcement follows another workforce reduction in February, when the company laid off around 800 employees, representing approximately 6% of its workforce, as part of efforts to streamline operations following its $1.2 billion acquisition of Depop. The repeated restructuring highlights eBay’s continued efforts to improve operational efficiency while prioritising business growth.
