Air Canada Express Jet Collides with Fire Truck at LaGuardia, Two Pilots Killed

An Air Canada Express CRJ-900 aircraft collided with a fire truck while landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and injuries to dozens of passengers. The flight, operated by Jazz Aviation and carrying 72 passengers along with four crew members, had departed from Montreal. Authorities confirmed that while many of the injured were treated and released, nine individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries. The accident forced the temporary closure of one of New York’s busiest airports, disrupting hundreds of flights.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire truck was responding to another aircraft that had reported an onboard odor and had been cleared to cross the runway at the time of the collision. Air traffic control audio suggests a possible communication breakdown, with investigators now focusing on coordination between controllers and ground vehicles. Aviation experts stress that such incidents are typically caused by multiple factors, including human error and operational challenges, rather than a single failure.

The crash comes amid growing concerns over aviation safety in the United States, including staffing shortages among air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration personnel. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Canada’s Transportation Safety Board have launched a joint investigation into the incident. With LaGuardia handling over 30 million passengers annually, the closure led to widespread cancellations and delays, further highlighting vulnerabilities in an already strained aviation system.
