Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the film set of “Rust”, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, a Santa Fe court ruled on Monday. The sentence followed her conviction last month, where it was determined her negligence led to the fatal shooting. Despite her legal team’s efforts to portray remorse, the judge criticized Gutierrez-Reed for her apparent lack of genuine remorse throughout the trial.
During the hearing, New Mexico special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey emphasized the importance of accountability in the justice system, noting that Gutierrez-Reed’s conduct and statements, including recorded jail phone calls, reflected her unwillingness to accept responsibility for the incident. Victim impact statements highlighted the profound grief and loss felt by Hutchins’ family and colleagues, further influencing the court’s decision.
The case has drawn significant attention due to its implications on safety protocols in film production and the roles individuals play in ensuring on-set safety. The trial of actor Alec Baldwin, also charged with involuntary manslaughter for his role in the shooting, is scheduled for July. This case continues to underscore the critical need for stringent adherence to safety measures in the entertainment industry.
