Baseball Legend Willie Mays Passes Away at 93

Willie Mays, one of baseball’s greatest players, passed away peacefully at 93, his family announced. Known for his incredible skill and athletic grace, Mays was a beloved figure in the sport. His son, Michael Mays, expressed gratitude for the love and support fans showed his father over the years.

San Francisco Giants chairman Greg Johnson and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Mays for his profound influence on the game and his inspirational legacy. Mays, the first Black player to captain a Major League Baseball team, was remembered for his tremendous talent, intellect, and joy. His career, marked by iconic moments like the 1954 World Series’ “The Catch,” left an indelible mark on baseball and American culture.

Born in Alabama in 1931, Mays began his career with the Birmingham Black Barons before joining the New York Giants in 1951. Over his illustrious career, he won two MVP awards, hit 660 home runs, and was a 24-time All-Star. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979 and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, Mays’ legacy as the “Say Hey Kid” will be cherished by fans worldwide.
