The United States issued a stark new warning on 10th February that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could start during the Olympics.
“At this point, we can’t pinpoint the day or the hour, but we can say that there is a credible prospect that a Russian military action would take place even before the end of the Olympics,” US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House. The Winter Olympics, which are currently taking place in Beijing, are set to end on February 20. On 10th February, Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered the same message in Melbourne, Australia: “As previously stated, we are in a time frame in which an invasion could occur at any time.
That includes the Olympics, to be clear.” According to Sullivan, the US still does not know whether Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a decision to invade. However, he stated that the situation had deteriorated to the point where Americans in Ukraine should leave “immediately” or at the very least “within the next 24 to 48 hours.”
