President Joe Biden proclaimed on Wednesday to initiate the process of pardoning US veterans convicted by the military for consensual gay sex, which was illegal until its repeal in late 2013. The Biden administration estimates that thousands of individuals may be affected by this move, potentially providing them eligibility for a pardon. “Our Nation’s service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives to defend our country,” Biden stated. “Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Affected individuals can apply for proof of eligibility, and if granted a certificate of pardon, they can then seek to have their discharge characterization changed. Senior administration officials mentioned that efforts are underway to reach out to those who might qualify for this pardon. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing past injustices faced by LGBTQI+ service members.
The measure to repeal the military ban on consensual gay sex was passed by the US Senate in late 2013 and subsequently signed by then-President Barack Obama. Biden, who served as vice president under Obama, is now continuing the efforts to rectify the discriminatory practices that impacted countless service members.
