Bombardier to Invest $270 Million in US After Trump Drops Ban Threat

Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier will invest approximately $270 million in the United States and recruit for 500 positions, following President Donald Trump’s decision to step back from threats to ban the company from the American market. The company also plans to create an additional 300 jobs through expansion projects, with hiring and investments spanning Texas, Kansas, Indiana and Connecticut. Bombardier said constructive discussions with the US administration had created a positive environment for further investment and growth.

Trump’s earlier threats had raised concerns in Kansas, particularly in Wichita, where Bombardier employs around 1,500 people. The issue attracted political attention ahead of the November 3 elections, prompting Kansas lawmakers, including Republican Senator Roger Marshall, to appeal to the White House. Bombardier, which acquired Learjet and established its US headquarters in Kansas in 1990, currently employs approximately 3,500 people across the country, with more than 40% of its US workforce based in Wichita. Trump subsequently assured workers that his administration would protect their jobs.

The latest investment announcement follows earlier tensions over aircraft certification and trade restrictions. In February, Trump threatened to decertify Bombardier aircraft amid a certification dispute involving rival Gulfstream Aerospace, but the threat was not implemented after Transport Canada approved Gulfstream’s G700 and G800 jets. The September threat to restrict Bombardier’s US operations had also raised concerns about the potential economic impact on American workers. The new investment and recruitment plans signal a more constructive relationship between the company and the Trump administration.
