Brooklyn Bishop Sentenced to Nine Years for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Scheme

Brooklyn bishop Lamor Miller-Whitehead, 46, received a nine-year prison sentence on Monday following his conviction for a series of financial crimes, announced the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The charges against Miller-Whitehead included wire fraud, attempted extortion, and making false statements to federal agents. Prosecutors detailed how he orchestrated multiple fraudulent schemes, swindling millions of dollars from victims, including parishioners and a businessman.

Miller-Whitehead, previously known for his extravagant lifestyle and leadership at the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries church in Canarsie, New York, faced consequences for his deceitful practices. His misconduct ranged from submitting falsified documents to financial institutions to extorting funds from individuals under false pretenses. Despite his claims of innocence, which his attorney Dawn Florio reiterated following the sentencing, the court found him guilty after a trial earlier this year.

In addition to the prison term, Miller-Whitehead was ordered to pay $85,000 in restitution and forfeit $95,000. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams condemned Miller-Whitehead as “a con man who abused his position of trust,” affirming the government’s commitment to holding accountable those who exploit their roles for personal gain. The case underscores ongoing efforts to combat financial fraud and uphold integrity within religious and community leadership roles.
