Bull and Schwarz Digits Join Forces to Develop European AI Computing Services

French supercomputer manufacturer Bull and Schwarz Digits, the technology arm of Germany’s Schwarz Group, have signed a preliminary agreement to jointly develop artificial intelligence computing services operating entirely under European jurisdiction. The partnership aims to strengthen Europe’s technological independence and expand its AI infrastructure capabilities. Under the agreement, Schwarz Digits will provide the services through its STACKIT cloud computing business, while Bull will be responsible for manufacturing the required technology.

The companies plan to jointly design servers for data centres, combining Bull’s expertise in high-performance computing with Schwarz Digits’ cloud infrastructure. The partnership could also eventually include business software from German technology company SAP. Organisations and public institutions using STACKIT will additionally gain access to Bull’s software for developing and operating AI applications directly on the platform. However, the companies have not disclosed the financial details of the agreement.

The collaboration comes amid growing investments by both companies in artificial intelligence and Europe’s digital infrastructure. Bull doubled production capacity at its European supercomputer manufacturing facility in October to support the continent’s AI ambitions. Meanwhile, Schwarz Group is leading a C$7 billion funding round for Canadian AI company Cohere, which is expanding its European presence through acquisitions, including Germany’s Aleph Alpha and Czech cybersecurity firm Aisle. The partnership with Bull further reinforces Schwarz Digits’ ambition to establish a stronger European-controlled AI and cloud computing ecosystem.
