ByteDance and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) have signed an agreement aimed at strengthening copyright safeguards for the Chinese tech giant’s AI video and image-generation models, following concerns from Hollywood over the use of protected intellectual property.
The agreement covers ByteDance’s Seedance video and Seedream image-generation models. In February, Disney and other major studios raised concerns that the tools could generate videos featuring copyrighted film and television characters, as well as celebrity likenesses, without authorization. The MPA subsequently sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter.
ByteDance said newer versions of its AI models feature stronger intellectual-property protections. The models are available through platforms including TikTok, CapCut and Dreamina. Both ByteDance and the MPA said they will continue working together on copyright safeguards as AI technology develops.
