Carrie Fisher: Star Wars Day Walk of Fame honour overshadowed by family row

On Star Wars Day, Hollywood is set to honor Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the iconic movie franchise, with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, the occasion is being marred by a family dispute between Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, and her siblings.

Lourd has been criticized by Fisher’s siblings for not inviting them to the ceremony, while she accused them of trying to exploit her mother’s death for personal gain. Carrie Fisher passed away in 2016 at the age of 60.

Actor Mark Hamill had called for Carrie Fisher to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018, and when it was announced that she would finally receive the honor, he said it was long overdue.

However, Fisher’s brother Todd has revealed that he was not invited to the event, which he described as “heartbreaking and shocking.” Fisher’s half-sister Joely Fisher also expressed disappointment at not being included in the event, saying that their niece, Billie Lourd, had chosen not to invite them. Joely Fisher added that they had been grieving their sister’s loss for years and had given Lourd the space to mourn in her own way.

Joely Fisher, Carrie Fisher’s half-sister, responded to not being invited to the Walk of Fame ceremony by saying that their exclusion was about “celebrating the permanency of Carrie’s legacy” and not a “photo op.” In response, Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher’s daughter, issued a statement to the Hollywood Reporter in which she apologized for feeling the need to defend herself publicly. Lourd said that her mother’s siblings had chosen to process their grief publicly after her death and capitalize on it for financial gain. She added that their actions were hurtful to her and that she chose to deal with her loss in a different way. Lourd also stated that the truth about her mother’s complicated relationship with her family was only known by those who were close to her.
