China Slams Demolition of Monument Honouring Chinese Community in Panama

China has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the demolition of a monument in Panama’s Arraijan district that commemorated the contributions of the Chinese community to the Panama Canal. The structure was torn down by local authorities, who cited safety concerns and the expiration of a land concession as justification for the move. The decision has sparked anger among local Chinese residents and drawn criticism from Panama’s president.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the demolition during a regular press briefing, calling the act “very bad in nature” and saying it had “seriously damaged the feelings of the vast number of overseas Chinese in Panama.” He added that the incident runs counter to the broader spirit of friendship and cooperation between China and Panama.

The demolition has also triggered wider discussions about heritage preservation and the recognition of immigrant communities’ historical contributions in Panama. As tensions simmer, observers say the episode may temporarily strain diplomatic sensitivities, even as both countries continue to emphasise the importance of stable bilateral relations.
