Powerful tornadoes ripped through Iowa, killing at least five people and injuring dozens more, with the small city of Greenfield in Adair County suffering extensive damage. The Iowa Department of Public Safety confirmed that four people died and at least 35 were injured in Greenfield, where homes, businesses, and a local hospital were either damaged or destroyed. In nearby Adams County, a female driver was killed when a tornado blew her vehicle off the road.
The severe weather also wreaked havoc in Nebraska, bringing torrential rain, high winds, and large hail, which resulted in widespread power outages and significant property damage. Omaha saw more than 10,000 customers lose power and experienced severe flooding, with firefighters rescuing people from vehicles submerged in water. The National Weather Service issued warnings for several states, predicting the storms to intensify and produce more destructive tornadoes.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for 15 counties and visited Greenfield to assess the damage and start the recovery process. The search and rescue mission continued to ensure all residents were accounted for amid the flattened homes and scattered debris. MidAmerican Energy Company’s wind farm near Greenfield also suffered unprecedented damage, with several turbines destroyed by the tornadoes.
