In a powerful display of solidarity and a call for peace amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, hundreds of demonstrators from the Jewish activist group, Jewish Voice for Peace, occupied New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. The protest, which took place during rush hour, aimed to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as Israeli military forces intensified their activities in the region.
Jewish Voice for Peace spokesperson, Jay Saper, emphasized the importance of the demonstration, stating, “Right now, you are hearing thousands of Jewish New Yorkers who are raising our voices so clear that our safety can never come at the expense of another community’s safety.” The protesters highlighted the need to protect lives and called for an end to the bombardment of Palestinians.
Despite the disruption caused by the sit-in, the demonstrators’ message resonated with many in the terminal, even as they faced arrests. The protest mirrored historical actions within Grand Central Terminal, and participants made it clear that they recognized the war’s true nature, emphasizing that it was not solely about Jewish safety. The sit-in lasted approximately an hour, with around 100 individuals taken into police custody. While the demonstration caused temporary service disruptions, it ultimately reopened without incident.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) expressed disappointment in the timing of the protest during rush hour but commended the professionalism of MTA officers and the New York City Police Department in handling the situation. This demonstration at the heart of New York City highlights the growing calls for a ceasefire and peace in the Israel-Hamas conflict from various segments of society.
